Ceremony of the Gods

Guide for Midday Meal – Offerings

While getting the food, the following verses should be read in silence and the mind should be aligned with them:

Opening of the bowl

The Buddha invented this bowl,

that I may open today.

May these offerings reach all living beings,

and the donor, the recipient and the given dissolve into emptiness.

OṂ SĪMA MAṆI SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Contemplating on the empty bowl (before filling the bowl)

While looking at this empty bowl

I vow to all living beings,

that they entirely and fully

be relieved of their suffering.

Contemplating on the filled bowl (after filling the bowl)

While looking at this filled bowl

I vow to all living beings,

that they will obtain sufficient and adequate wholesomeness.

Go to your seat, sit upright and visualize as follows:

Upright sitting

While I sit down

I vow to all living beings,

that they sit on the throne of enlightenment,

and keep no obstacles in mind.

OṂ VAJRA ANIÑJA PRĀPTĀYA SVĀHĀ. (3x)

(Fold the hands together and visualize as follows: Above in front of our faces are the Buddhas; in the centre Vairocana Buddha, Locana Buddha on the left, Shakyamuni Buddha on the right, at the front Maitreya Buddha and Amitabha Buddha at the back. Each Buddha is surrounded by Bodhisattvas and behind them are the sutras they teach. Before each Buddha is one of our bodies and we hold a try made of gold, a bowl made of diamonds that’s filled with precious, rare and good food, presenting the offerings to the Buddhas. Afterwards the text of great offerings is chanted together):

To the Buddha of pure Dharmakaya, Vairocana,

to the Buddha of perfect Sambhogakaya, Locana,

to the Buddha of Nirmanakaya, Shakyamuni,

to the Buddha of the future, Maitreya,

all the Buddhas from all the ten directions and three times,

to the Bodhisattva of great wisdom, Manjushri,

to the Bodhisattva of great compassion, Avalokiteshvara,

to the Bodhisattva of great deeds, Samantabhadra,

to all the Bodhisattvas and great beings,

the great Prajna Paramita, I present offerings.

The three virtues and six tastes are offered to the Budhas and the Sangha, as well as all sentient beings in the worlds. During the meal I vow to all living beings that through meditation their hunger will be satisfied and happiness will be experienced.

The ceremony leader holds a small cup in his left hand and puts seven rice grains in with his right hand, afterwards forms his right hand to Katari Mudra and recites silently:

 Offerings to the ghosts:

The power of the Dharma is inconceivable,

the compassion without boundaries,

these seven grains of rice in all ten directions,

are being sacrificed in all worlds as numerous as the sand of the Ganges.

OṂ TRHYIṂ SVĀHĀ. (3x)

The little cup is given to the serving monk who offers the oblations to the outdoor.

All your ghosts and demons,

I bring you sacrifices today,

All these foods appear in all ten directions,

for the ghosts and demons.

OṂ MULĀLIN SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Food offerings (serving monk)

The eagle with golden wings,

All the soaring ghosts and demons,

Mothers and children of the hungry ghosts,

May get sufficient nectar.

OṂ MUKTI SVĀHĀ. (3x)

The ceremony leader continues in the dining room:

Mantras for the transformation of food and beverages that should be chanted together now:

Mantra for the transformation of food:

NAMO SARVA TATHĀGATA AVALOKITE OṂ SAMBAHARA SAMBHARA HUṂ. (3x)

Mantra for the transformation of beverages:

NAMO SŪRĀBHAYA TATHĀGATA TADYATHĀ OṂ SŪRA SŪRAPĀTRA SŪRAPĀTRA SŪRA SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Mantra for the great offerings:

OṂ GAGANA SAMBHAVA VAJRA HUṂ. (3x)

Mantra recitation to avoid food poisoning (deputy monk):

The Buddha taught that while eating, the practitioners should adhere to the five visualizations. With a scattered mind and chatter, the presented food is difficult to digest. May the community commemorate the Buddha with a concentrated mind:

Namo Amitabha Buddha. (chanted together)

“OṂ SAMBHARA GATA” (7x)

Hold the bowl with both hands in front of your forehead and recite quietly:

Holding this alms-bowl,

I vow to all living beings,

that they will become a Dharma container

and can receive offerings from the heavenly beings and humans.

OṂ KILI KILI VAJRA HŪṂ PHAṬ. (3x)

Give off a portion of food:

(take a little bit of rice out and recite and visualize as follows)

In order to acquire merit,

and to bring all demons great benefits,

may they be freed from their suffering by eating this food

and after leaving those bodies may they be reborn in a happy land.

The merit of the Bodhisattvas,

are limitless as the universe,

through letting go, one reaches this state,

and proceeds without stopping.

OṂ TRHYIṂ SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Three vows:

1st Spoon: (ca. 7 rice grains) May I refrain from unwholesome deeds

2nd Spoon: May I commit wholesome deeds

3rd Spoon: May I bring all sentient beings to deliverance

(While chewing, the five visualizations should be carried out; as during the entire time of eating)

1 Think of the processes from the origin to the consumption of the food

2 Check if your own merits are sufficient enough for receiving this food

3 Prevent that during the meal greed, hatred and delusion arises in your mind

4 Consider this food as medicine against hunger and weakness

5 Receive this food only with the intention to attain Buddhahood

(Place your bowl on the table; the following is chanted together)

NAMO SAPTĀNĀṂ SAMYAKSAṂBUDDHĀ KOṬINĀṂ TADYATHĀ OṂ CALE CULE CUṆDHE SVĀHĀ. (7x)

Through these offerings everyone will receive great healing benefits, through the offering with joy, everyone will receive bliss. With the end of this meal, I vow that all living beings will always find Buddha Dharma in all their deeds.

Dedication

Commemorate the expense of the weavers for that we wear cloth on our body.

Commemorate the struggle of the farmers for that we have three meals a day.

We promise to follow the teachings of the Buddha and vow to the benefit of all sentient beings to attain enlightenment. May all deceased be reborn in the Pure Land, everyone alive experience bliss and all living beings attain Buddhahood.

Chant together: NAMO AMITABHA BUDDHA

(The meal is taken in silence while the previous mentioned five visualizations are being performed)

Cleaning the bowl

This water to clean the bowl,

I visualize as the nectar of the heavens,

and offer it to the ghosts and demons,

that they may experience wholesomeness instantly.

OṂ VAHURITĀ SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Holding the toothpick

By holding the toothpick in my hand,

I vow to all living beings,

that they will experience wonderment,

and will be completely cleansed.

OṂ SVABHAVA ŚUDDHA SARVA DHARMĀ, SVABHAVA ŚUDDHO. OṂ RAṂ SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Using the toothpick

While I use this toothpick,

I vow to all living beings,

that their minds will return to their true nature,

and they move away from suffering.

OṂ AMOGHA-JVALA JĪVA-KARA SAṂŚODHANE PADMA-KUMĀRA-JIVĀ SAṂŚODHAYA DHĀRA DHĀRA SUJVALE SVĀHĀ. (3x)

Drinking

The Buddha sees in a bowl of water

84000 small living things.

If the mantra is not recited,

it would resemble the consumption of meat.

OṂ VAŚI PRAMAṆI SVĀHĀ. (3x)
